Formula Kentucky

Formula Kentucky is the University of Kentucky's Formula SAE team. It is a student organization in which students design, build, and race their vehicle against other university teams. By being on the team, students are able to gain hands-on experience with engineering design and manufacturing. The team also engage in various outreach throughout the Bluegrass community to promote and encourage education in STEM related fields.

Currently, the team is preparing its vehicle for FSAE Lincoln 2018. The team will compete in a variety of events to gain points based on vehicle design, cost, and performance.

For the 2018 competition year, Formula Kentucky is designing a semi-automatic paddle shifting system to facilitate easier operation of the car by the driver. This system includes a paddle shifters on the wheel, a control board connected to the paddle shifters, and a control board connected to a servo that controls the transmission’s shifter linkage.

The control boards for both the servo and the paddle shifters are teensy 3.2s, which communicate via CAN to send the signal from the paddle shifter to actuate the servo for shifting. PCBs are used on these control boards to facilitate easier implementation of the additional modules required for the CAN communication, as well as allowing ease of connecting and disconnecting the teensy and power/communication wires.
