3D printing materials Resin Nylon Industrial Plastics metal

Summary:       Each material has advantages and disadvantages, and you can choose the right one for your purpose and needs. This article can help you better understand the different properties of each material.

Resin materials

The most commonly used material is resin. PCBWay has a wide range of resins to choose from. You can choose different resins according to your needs.

Resin products have a high degree of surface smoothness and are often used as decorative items. However, resin materials are not suitable for outdoor use and will oxidize and turn yellow over time. Some resin materials cannot withstand high temperature, so they may be deformed. Here is a link on how to repair it after they are deformed by heat.

If you have high requirements for heat resistance and strength, these materials are recommended: Somos@Ledo, Somos@Taurus, Somos@Perform, UTR 8220, UTRFlex, UTR Therm.

Nylon materials

Nylon is a material that has high strength so it is preferred over resin for parts with easily deformed structures. It also has good corrosion resistance, so it is suitable for making parts with high corrosion resistance requirements. Nylon can be used in the manufacture of automobile parts, mechanical parts.

Due to the high strength of the nylon material, no support is required for printing.

Compared to resin, nylon is a heat-resistant material. However, the surface is not as smooth as resin, and there may be particles on the surface. The HP-PA-12 material will have a smoother surface than other nylon materials.

Industrial Plastics materials

There are 6 industrial plastics materials to choose from: PLA, ABS, PEG, ASA, PC, and PEEK.

All of these plastic materials are cheap, PLA is the cheapest and it is a green material because it is extracted from plants. It is also available in a variety of colors.

However, industrial plastics materials are not suitable for long-term outdoor use because they lose color and become brittle. And the surface is not as smooth as resin or nylon and the printed layers are clearly visible.

Metallic materials

Metallic materials are strong, durable and thermally conductive, making them suitable for manufacturing parts that require high strength and durability. Metal printing also allows for complex geometries and internal structures.

Metallic material is more expensive than other materials. Among the metallic materials, aluminum is the most popular. Compared to other materials, aluminum is cost-effective in terms of performance and price. Titanium is the lightest but expensive. Tool steel is the heaviest.

Metal 3D printing has a wide range of applications, including aerospace, medical, automotive, mechanical, and energy industries
