CHARLOTTE, N.C. The city of Charlotte expects to spend more than $1.3 million to clean PCB contamination found in its sewer system.
The Charlotte Observer reported (//bit.ly/1gyGvEu) that PCBs traced to a grocery store grease trap were detected as they flowed into a treatment plant in February.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utility Department said earlier this month that PCBs also showed up in sludge at another plant.
Utility officials think the PCBs were dumped by someone who wanted to avoid the expense of legally disposing of the cancer-causing materials.
Officials have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the dumping.
Charlotte City Council approved contracts Monday night totaling nearly $1 million for testing, waste handling and decontamination from the PCB dumping. More than $300,000 has been approved for lab equipment.
